About Peperomia
Peperomia is a genus in the family Piperaceae with about 1,000 to 1,600 species. It occurs throughout the tropics and subtropics worldwide, with most species in Central and northern South America, and Peperomia japonica reaches southern Japan. Most species are compact perennial herbs under 30 cm tall, often epiphytic, that store water in fleshy leaves and stems, unlike the mostly shrubby and climbing species of Piper. Several species are grown as houseplants, including Peperomia obtusifolia and Peperomia argyreia.
An evergreen perennial herb native from southern Florida in the United States to tropical America. The stems creep slightly before turning upright, and the obovate, fleshy leaves have a smooth, glossy, waxy surface. Small flowers are borne on cylindrical spikes. Plants typically reach 10 to 50 cm in height and spread, and cultivars with yellow or cream variegated leaves are also grown.
