    About Piperaceae

Piperaceae is a family of flowering plants in the order Piperales under APG IV, comprising about 5 genera and 3,000 to 3,600 species. It is distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics, with the greatest diversity in Central and South America. Growth forms range from small trees and shrubs to herbs, either terrestrial or epiphytic, and the tiny flowers lack petals and are densely packed on slender spikes. Most species belong to two genera, Piper, which includes black pepper, and Peperomia, which is widely grown for its ornamental foliage.

    Peperomia

Peperomia is a genus in the family Piperaceae with about 1,000 to 1,600 species. It occurs throughout the tropics and subtropics worldwide, with most species in Central and northern South America, and Peperomia japonica reaches southern Japan. Most species are compact perennial herbs under 30 cm tall, often epiphytic, that store water in fleshy leaves and stems, unlike the mostly shrubby and climbing species of Piper. Several species are grown as houseplants, including Peperomia obtusifolia and Peperomia argyreia.
