Distributed in Guatemala and Mexico, this species grows on pine trees in humid forest areas at elevations of 1200-2000 m. The specific epithet derives from the Latin adjective velutina, meaning velvety.
An epiphytic species endemic to the Central Mexican Plateau. Forms rosettes of leaves and grows primarily on large trees in humid temperate forests, particularly on Abies religiosa, Quercus rugosa, and Quercus laurina. The species name "violacea" refers to the violet coloration of the flowers. Due to its high-elevation habitat, this species exhibits tolerance to sub-freezing conditions, distinguishing it from most other Tillandsia species.
