    About aureum

Epipremnum aureum is a climbing aroid in the genus Epipremnum (Araceae), sold under the name pothos. It is native to Mo'orea in the Society Islands and climbs trees by clinging with aerial roots. Plants sold as houseplants are in their juvenile stage, with heart-shaped leaves often variegated with yellow or other colours. Once a stem climbs and matures, the leaves reach 30 to 40 cm long and develop pinnate divisions, and outdoors the vines can grow to about 12 m. It was formerly treated as Scindapsus aureus, and some authors treat it as a cultivar of E. pinnatum. All parts contain needle-like calcium oxalate crystals, and chewing the plant causes pain and swelling of the mouth, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing, so keep it away from pets and children. It has naturalized in many tropical regions and is listed as a Category II invasive species in Florida.

    Care Tips

Grow in bright, indirect light or light shade. Strong direct sun can scorch the leaves. It tolerates low light for long periods, but variegation fades when light is insufficient. From spring to autumn, water thoroughly once the soil surface has dried, and keep it on the dry side in winter. Overwatering causes root rot. It is not cold hardy, so keep it indoors at 10°C or above in winter. Feed with slow-release or liquid fertiliser during the growing season and stop in winter. Stem cuttings root readily, including in water. Given a support to climb and enough light, it produces larger mature leaves. Mealybugs, scale insects and thrips can appear. The sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when pruning.
