    Origin & Distribution

    Native Region
    Central Malesia to Queensland (Australia)
    Distribution
POWO lists the native range as Central Malesia to Queensland, including Borneo, Sulawesi, the Philippines, the Maluku Islands, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Solomon Islands and Queensland. Its truly wild range is unclear, as it was spread across tropical Asia and the Pacific in prehistoric times as a food crop. It is now cultivated as an ornamental throughout the tropics and naturalized in places such as Hawaii and Singapore.
    Habitat
Humid tropical forest and wet sites, and commonly ditches, field margins, roadsides and gardens near human settlements. Naturalized plants often grow along streams in low-elevation valleys.

    About macrorrhizos

A massive evergreen perennial herb in the arum family that forms a thick, erect trunk, reaching about 4 m tall in large plants. The arrow-shaped leaf blades grow up to about 1.2 m long and 50 cm wide on leaf stalks up to about 1.3 m long. It resembles Alocasia odora but grows larger. It has long been cultivated across tropical Asia and the Pacific islands as a starchy root crop, so where it occurs truly wild is unclear. It is also grown as an ornamental foliage plant, including cultivars with creamy white variegation.

    Care Tips

Grow in bright light with some shade. It tolerates full sun to partial shade. Keep the soil moist but well drained, since the corms can rot in waterlogged, poorly drained soil. A fertile loamy mix suits it best, though it tolerates sandy and clay soils. It prefers warm, humid conditions and is sensitive to cold. Allow ample space, as plants can reach about 4 m tall with leaves over 1 m long. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the skin, mouth and throat, and the plant is toxic if eaten, so wear gloves when handling it and keep it away from children and pets. It can be propagated from seed or corms.
