A saxicolous bromeliad originally described as Cryptanthus schwackeanus by Mez. Endemic to the campos rupestres (rocky grasslands) of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Occurs on rocky outcrops in montane environments subject to rigorous climatic and edaphic conditions. Some taxonomic treatments place this species in the genus Hoplocryptanthus. Part of a species complex that includes several related taxa adapted to iron-rich and quartzite substrates.
