Found in the Barranca del Cobre of Chihuahua, Mexico, growing on trees at about 1200 m. The specific epithet honours Elizabeth Gay of Tarzana, California.
Known from Narino in southern Colombia, growing on trees in forest at 2000 m on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera of Pasto. The species is known only from the type collection.
