Found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, this species grows as an epiphyte in woodlands and is sometimes found on rocks, at elevations of 500-1440 m.
A rare lithophytic bromeliad endemic to the southern Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Forms rosettes with narrow leaves and produces compound inflorescences with orange-yellow flowers. Named after botanist Apparicio P. Duarte. Originally described as Cryptanthus duartei.
