A small deciduous pachycaul tree reaching up to 1.2m tall with a barrel-shaped trunk covered in corky, warty bark. Branches grow in a distinctive zigzag pattern. Produces tiny glossy compound leaves and small yellowish-green flowers. Dioecious species. Autumn foliage turns red before leaf drop.
A miniature caulescent species endemic to Salta province in northwestern Argentina. Mature plants are only 3-4cm tall and 2-3cm wide with thick, succulent gray-green foliage covered in cinereous subappressed scales. The leaves are densely polystichous, narrowly triangular, and pungent. This slow-growing species produces pale blue to nearly white flowers. It grows on sedimentary rocks in its natural habitat.
