A pachycaul succulent shrub or small tree with a swollen caudex that stores water. Grows 2-4m tall in habitat. Produces clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers primarily in pink and red shades. Evergreen or drought-deciduous depending on conditions. Contains cardiac glycosides in all parts, making it highly toxic if ingested.
Famous for its extremely thin leaves and massive fenestrations that can occupy up to 90% of the leaf surface.
A terrestrial bromeliad notable for its highly fragrant flowers, as indicated by the specific epithet odoratissima (Latin superlative meaning "most fragrant"). Originally described as Cryptanthus odoratissimus and transferred to Rokautskyia in 2017. Members of the former Cryptanthus subgenus Hoplocryptanthus, to which this species shows affinity, are characterized by perfumed flowers. Endemic to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil.
