Native to Guerrero and Jalisco in Mexico, where it grows as an epiphyte in tropical deciduous forest at 50 to 190 m, in arid or warm subhumid areas. The specific epithet refers to the Rio San Nicolas, the river near the type locality in Jalisco.
Tillandsia novakii is native to Veracruz, Mexico, growing as an epiphyte on small, sparse trees at around 65 meters elevation. The species is named after A. J. Novak of Austin, Texas, who first provided a specimen with collection data.
