A distinct species from Mexico and Belize featuring coriaceous (leathery) leaves that are deeply pinnatifid. The pinnae (segments) are broad, and the leaves typically lack fenestrations. The inflorescence is notably large and stout.
A winter-growing caudiciform vine with a large, partially exposed tuber covered in thick, corky plates resembling a tortoise shell. The tuber can reach over 1m in diameter and height in habitat. Produces annual climbing stems with heart-shaped leaves during the cooler months, dying back in summer. Dioecious with small greenish-yellow flowers.
Occurs in Ecuador and Peru, growing epiphytically in dry open scrub and woodland at elevations of 200-900 m.
Native to northwestern Mexico, growing as an epiphyte in dry forests and thickets at elevations of 10 to 45 meters.
