Native to Mexico, where it grows as an epiphyte in Abies and Pinus woods at 2650 to 3100 m. The specific epithet derives from Oaxaca, the state of the type locality.
A pachycaul succulent shrub or small tree with a swollen caudex that stores water. Grows 2-4m tall in habitat. Produces clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers primarily in pink and red shades. Evergreen or drought-deciduous depending on conditions. Contains cardiac glycosides in all parts, making it highly toxic if ingested.
Native to Colombia and Ecuador, growing as an epiphyte in thickets and forests at elevations of 2100 to 4000 m.
Native to Chuquisaca in Bolivia, occurring at an elevation of about 1,800 m. The type collection was made in the Oropeza area along the upper course of the Rio Chico.
