A large terrestrial species with impressive heart-shaped leaves that can reach over 90 cm in length. Leaves have a velvety texture with prominent white to pale green venation against a dark green background. New leaves emerge with a coppery-red coloration. The petioles are thick and can reach 60 cm or more.
A saxicolous bromeliad endemic to the campos rupestres (rocky grasslands) of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Originally described as Cryptanthus regius by Elton Leme in 2007. The specific epithet regius (Latin for "royal" or "regal") refers to its distinctive appearance. This species occurs on rocky outcrops in montane environments of the Espinhaço Range. Some taxonomic treatments place this species in the genus Hoplocryptanthus.
