    Origin & Distribution

    Native Region
Africa and Madagascar (exact native range uncertain)
    Distribution
POWO treats it as native to Madagascar. Other sources give a native range across northeastern, central and southern Africa, possibly extending to nearby islands and the Arabian Peninsula. It has been introduced and naturalized widely in tropical regions, including Brazil, India, Vietnam and the Philippines.
    Habitat
Dry habitats such as savanna, desert and dry shrubland, often on black clay soils. It is also widely planted as a hedge.

    About tirucalli

A succulent shrub or small tree in the spurge family, reaching up to 7 m tall. It branches repeatedly into smooth, green, pencil-thick succulent stems, often in whorls, and its small leaves, 1 to 2.5 cm long, fall early so the plant appears leafless. Its native range is uncertain because of its long history of cultivation. POWO treats it as native to Madagascar, while other sources include dry regions of eastern and southern Africa. It is known as milk bush or pencil tree, and the white latex released from cut stems is toxic and can severely irritate the skin and eyes.

    Care Tips

Grow in full sun or bright light year-round. Water thoroughly once the soil has dried from spring to autumn, and in winter water sparingly, about once every two to four weeks. Avoid waterlogged soil and use a free-draining mix. Keep it above about 5°C in winter, since it is frost sensitive, although mature plants can survive brief drops to around -1°C. The milky latex is toxic and strongly irritating, and contact with the eyes can cause severe pain, corneal injury and temporary loss of vision. Wear gloves and eye protection when pruning or taking cuttings, and keep the plant away from children and pets.
